The Right Honourable David Johnston and Mrs. Sharon Johnston graciously accepted the role of Honourary Patrons of the Military Family Services Program (MFSP) in 2011. On countless occasions, since assuming their initial vice-regal term, Their Excellencies have demonstrated kindness and support toward Canadian military families.
Their Excellencies have selected pillars of services for their extended term in office including, supporting families and children, education and innovation, as well as volunteerism and philanthropy. Clearly the Military Family Services Program resonates with Their Excellencies as we too are dedicated to meeting the unique challenges and improving the lives of families.
The Honourary Patron status is also complementary to His Excellency’s role as Commander in Chief of Canada. As Commander in Chief, the Governor General plays a major role in recognizing the importance of Canada’s military, visiting Canadian Armed Forces personnel and their families, at home and abroad.
Further, in 2016 Her Excellency Sharon Johnston was appointed honorary captain (Navy) for Military Personnel Command of the Canadian Armed Forces for her work in supporting military families and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental illness. Honorary naval captains act as a bridge between military and civilian communities. The minister of National Defence approves all honorary appointments, on the recommendation of the chief of the Defence Staff. These appointments are generally for a period of three years, although extensions may be granted.
