Military Family Home-Based Business Group (MFHBBG) Meetings
Are you a military dependent who runs, or would like to run, your own home-based business? Join the MFHBBG to network with other home-based business entrepreneurs in the military community.  This group meets the 1st Tuesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the GMFRC. This is a great opportunity to learn from and share with others who are running a business from home within the unique military lifestyle.  For more information on this group please contact Stephanie at 765-1494 local 1816.

Need a JOB??

Postings can mean great opportunities. Opening up new doors, the chance to see a new place and make some new connections, or even the opportunity to come home. However, with all of the pros and cons of moving, employment is one of the main concerns for many families when they are introduced to a new town. How do you go about searching for a job in a place where you don’t know anyone or where to apply? Even with the technologies and services available today, job search can be a challenge for even the most confident and trained individual. Here are some tips to help you navigate and land the job that fits you!
Get a subscription to the local newspaper as soon as you can (online is a great option and many local papers are free!). This will allow you to look at the classified section, not necessarily to find a job before you move but to see what the job market is like in that area.

Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for a complete listing of the businesses in the local area. This will help you get an idea of what your options are for employment in that area. They may not all be hiring but it will give you a good handle on what to look for when you arrive.

Ensure your resume and cover letter are up to date. Take advantage of any services that can assist you with this such as your local Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC), Service Canada, and any other organizations that assist folks with employment resources and assistance.

Check out the local employment services available at your new location such as MFRC’s, recruiting and staffing firms, job placement agencies, etc. They will have insight into the local job market and can suggest ways to improve or assist with your job search. Also, before you move, visit your current services so that they can put you in touch with the services available in your new location.

Get to know your neighbours. If you know anyone in that area, it can be a positive networking opportunity for you. They may have an idea of who is hiring, what the local job market is like, and may even be willing to hand in your application to some employers they know.

Get to know the area. Get involved with groups in the community who share common interests with you. This will give you more opportunities to network and find out who’s hiring. The hidden job market is huge!

Volunteer your time with local organizations. Volunteer opportunities provide concrete skills and experiences for you to add to your resume and you never know when a volunteer experience could lead to a contact and maybe a job.

If you are in a career that requires provincial registration, (teachers, nurses, etc.), start the certification process in advance. This will allow you to be ready to put out applications when you arrive or send them to the appropriate agencies in advance of your move.

Use technology to your advantage. Networking is certainly supported now with programs such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter – it has never been easier to stay in touch with friends and family, and you can use these methods to network with potential employers.

The Education and Employment Coordinator here at the Greenwood Military Family Resource Centre (GMFRC), meets with families regularly who struggle with the challenging task of finding employment in a new place, whether it’s a large city or rural town like Greenwood. The tips and techniques suggested here can help you land a position that meets your employment goals and can also help you to develop your personal goals along the way. If you would like assistance, please call 765-5611 and take advantage of this service that can benefit you and your family.
