Family Readiness
When families are prepared, they fare better (and feel less stress) during separations. It is important for families to prepare a Family Care Plan for the unexpected. The following checklists will also help ease the stress of deployment separation.

Preparing Children for Deployment
The pre-deployment period is stressful for both parents and children. Children may not fully understand why one of their parents must leave. Very often, children may become confused and fearful that the remaining parent will also desert them.
Children benefit from a method of measuring the passage of time. Try a ceremonial crossing-off of each day on a calendar, or tearing a link off a paper chain. And, most importantly, prepare in advance to provide your children with the emotional support they might need during the deployment period.
