NMFC Overview!

What is the National Military Family Council?

The National Military Family Council (NMFC) is an advisory council that provides a voice for military families to the senior leadership of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence. The Canadian Forces recognizes the unique experiences and capacity of military families and looks to the NMFC to provide them valuable insight on policies affecting family life.

Who sits on the NMFC?

NMFC members reflect the environmental, demographic, and geographic diversity of the Canadian Forces. The Council is comprised of spouses and parents of military personnel. Council members are selected every two years based on their varied professional skill sets, experience with policy analysis, and the unique personal insights they’ve gained as part of a military family.

When does the Council meet and what do they discuss?

The NMFC holds two meetings per year with the Armed Forces Council to discuss Canadian Forces policies affecting families, and other emerging family issues. The NMFC also holds several face-to-face and virtual meetings throughout the year to review family policy information and reports, and to share information on the issues affecting military families throughout the Canadian Forces.

How does the NMFC learn about the issues impacting families?

Council members receive national family information and reports through Director Quality of Life.  Council members are military families themselves and have first hand understanding of the unique experiences of military family life. In addition, Council members receive information, research and reports through Director Quality of Life. NMFC members also welcome feedback from military families via email. Every email sent to the NMFC will be responded to in a timely fashion.

Why should I connect with my NMFC ?

If a Canadian Forces policy issue impacts one family, it likely impacts many more. By sharing thoughts, experiences, information and reports with the NMFC, you’re helping bring a voice for families to the forefront of Canadian Forces policy.
