Frequently Asked Questions

Why volunteer with the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC)?

By becoming a PMFRC volunteer, your help and support will lead to personal fulfillment, reference building, and internal hiring opportunities. We also offer child care assistance while you are volunteering.

Where can I volunteer?

As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to dedicate your time to any PMFRC department that interests you.

What kind of work can I do?

Our volunteer opportunities range from providing child care and facilitating workshops, to joining our Board of Directors and committees, to helping in our offices and with deployment activities—and virtually any other task that may interest you.

Do I have a choice about where I volunteer?
Absolutely! We aim to match your interests and skills with the specific requirements of our  departments.

What is the procedure for becoming a volunteer?

To become a volunteer with the PMFRC, you must attend a brief one-hour orientation session, plus allow us to do a police record check and contact one of your personal references.

Are there age restrictions?

You must be at least 12 years old in order to volunteer with the PMFRC. Volunteering with us is a wonderful opportunity for youth to obtain their Community Service Hours.

What sort of paperwork do I need to complete to register?

We require a police record check and a personal reference check. Don’t worry—we will guide you through the process of completing these forms.

How long do I have to commit for?

It’s your choice. Your commitment to a particular volunteer position depends entirely upon your circumstances, interests, and the length of time you are available. We can offer you the chance to volunteer seasonally, intermittently, or for one-time occasions.

What would my volunteer schedule be like?

You can volunteer at any time of the week, day or evening. While most volunteering takes place during office hours, you can volunteer during evenings and weekends, too, depending on what you want to do.

Do I need experience or qualifications?

This depends entirely on the opportunity. Some volunteer roles may require specific job skills or qualifications, while others ask only for a willingness to learn.

I work full-time. Can I still volunteer?

There are many volunteer opportunities that do not require you to be available during regular business hours.

What happens if I start volunteering but I decide to leave?

You’re under no obligation to keep a volunteer position that you’re unhappy with. To see if your issues can be addressed, talk with your supervisor or the volunteer coordinator before you give an appropriate amount of notice that you're leaving your voluntary role.

Can I volunteer in French, or work in a bilingual area to practice my French?

Yes. Many of our areas of interest provide the opportunity to learn or practice a new language, or to work comfortably in your primary language.
