Violence against Women

The Trenton Military Family Resource Centre in partnership with the Ministry of Community and Social Services offers a Bilingual Violence Against Women Program for women and children who have experienced abuse and / or sexual assault. The program is housed at the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre located at CFB Trenton in order to offer services to the Francophone population living on the base and the greater Quinte area, which is estimated to be roughly 40%.

SERVICE OBJECTIVES:  

  • To provide community-based general counselling, support and referral services for women and their children who have experienced abuse and/or sexual assault, including historic sexual abuse in childhood in order that they may live free of domestic violence. 
  • Types of counselling services include: crisis/support counselling (includes safety planning;  advocating providing rights information, referrals, follow-up support, outreach); sexual assault counselling; and long-term therapeutic counselling to assist women who have experienced abuse to gain a more in-depth understanding of woman abuse and empowerment and cope with the effects of violence. 
  • To support the development of a personal safety plan for women and their children, who have experienced abuse, in order to confirm their immediate safety and help them avoid further abuse.

Eligibility

Counselling services are provided to women and their children who are victims of physical and emotional abuse and/or sexual assault, including historic sexual abuse in childhood.

Individual Planning and Goal Setting:

Individual Safety Plan

Each woman will have an Individual safety plan that reflects her immediate personal circumstances, needs and choices. The plan will be comprehensive, concrete, and will include safety strategies and referrals to appropriate services.

Types of counselling services include: crisis/support counselling (includes safety planning; advocacy assistance, providing rights information, referrals, follow-up support, outreach and follow-up); sexual assault counselling; and long-term therapeutic counselling to assist women who have experienced abuse to gain a more in-depth understanding of woman abuse and empowerment and cope with the effects of violence.

Program Goals:

Counselling services are provided in order to:

  • Increase the safety of women and their children who are fleeing violent relationships and prevent further re-victimization.
  • Support women to understand their rights, self esteem needs, and safety planning and violence prevention strategies.
  • Support mothers, in their parenting skills, as they assist their children to heal from the effects of witnessing violence.
  • Avoid the possible later need for more intensive and intrusive assistance.
  • Assist with the health, safety and well being needs of women and their children.

Other Program Expectations :

  • Program will respect the diverse needs of all women including francophone, Aboriginal, rural, cultural and women with disabilities.
  • Program will seek to empower women in their various roles, by means of counselling that is person centred and esteem building.
  • The level of support is based on an assessment of the individual's needs, preferences and available individual, agency, community and contracted Ministry resources.
