Captain Olivier Savaria, a dedicated member of 15 Wing in Moose Jaw, has exemplified this spirit of volunteerism through his passion for grappling training. Over the past two years, his commitment to the program has provided an introduction to the sport for military members and prepared them to compete at the Canadian Armed Forces Canada West Grappling Championships.

Olivier initiated grappling training at 15 Wing, Moose Jaw two years ago. As an active member going above and beyond his call of duty, he stood up weekly training sessions, from sourcing mats and cleaning equipment to recruiting participants, he meticulously planned and executed every aspect of the program, ensuring its success and longevity.

“I was inspired to start the 15 Wing grappling program by a Major, who did something similar back when he was in Cold Lake. He managed to generate a lot of interest in grappling on base and built a community of grapplers that is still alive and well today, years after he was posted elsewhere. My goal with the 15 Wing program was to give military members the chance to get introduced to grappling in an environment that was accessible and conducive to learning and progressing. Grappling is a difficult sport to begin, so removing barriers by having it on base with peers seemed like a great idea to me.”

In addition to the training sessions, Olivier recognized the need for a platform to share training information with the military community at 15 Wing Moose Jaw. To address this, he took the initiative to create a grappling Facebook group. This platform allows military members to stay connected, exchange valuable training tips, and foster a sense of camaraderie within the community.

“Olivier’s commitment to volunteerism, while balancing his family commitments, makes him a stellar role model. His dedication to continuing the training sessions while on paternity leave has inspired others and highlights the importance of giving back to the community. Through his professionalism and expertise, he has set a high standard for the weekly training sessions, ensuring that every participant receives the best possible instruction.”
