January 2023 - Ryan Cornish

Ryan Cornish is the Volunteer of the Month. Ryan volunteers every Monday night with the Special Olympics; he sits on the board of directors for the Gander Community Youth Network. He volunteers at the Food Bank in town once a week.

“My favorite task is volunteering through the Learn to Swim program with Special Olympics, Ryan says. “I enjoy using my skills as a Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor to teach athletes how to swim or simply to help them enjoy time in the water.”

For decades, Special Olympics Canada has optimized the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle through sport to improve the well-being of individuals with an intellectual disability.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Special Olympics movement and keep activities running all year round. Volunteers can choose to get involved at the club, community, regional or Provincial/Territorial Chapter levels. Some volunteers offer a few hours of their time a year at specific events, while others work several hours a week year-round. Whatever their interests, talents, background and availability, Special Olympics has volunteer opportunities for everyone.

“Volunteering makes me feel like I’m part of a community,” says Ryan. “When I give freely of my time to the benefit of others, it comes with a certain sense of gratification, of time well spent, and benevolence”

Congratulations Ryan.
