Get involved in your Unit's Fitness – FORCE Evaluator and military Fitness & Sports Courses

Discover National PSP Training Centre (NTC) CAF fitness and sport leadership qualifications for military members delivered in partnership with the Canadian Forces Training and Development Centre (CFTDC).

The National PSP Training Centre (NTC) produces high quality training and education in collaboration with PSP stakeholders, CFTDC, and CAF Health Services. The NTC promotes the implementation of up-to-date, evidenced-based, and comprehensive information to benefit the CAF in its entirety. 

Course descriptions and eligibility

Each training session is offered in both official languages.

  • FORCE Evaluator – Guardian Course Qualification Code: 120950

    This qualification will enable personnel to conduct the FORCE Evaluation IAW with the FORCE Evaluation Operations Manual.
     

    Course Length 

    Module 1 - 8 (3 hours on DLN)
    Module 9 (One day, in-person workshop)
      

    Prerequisites 

    Personnel must meet the following requirements to be selected for this specialty: 

    • Have the rank of Corporal (Cpl) / Sailor 1st Class (S1) and above 
    • Be currently qualified in St. John’s Standard Level First Aid and CPR 
    • Medical standards

    • Participants must achieve the minimum physical fitness requirement IAW DAOD 5023-2.


    Requalification

    To remain FORCE Evaluator qualified, personnel must requalify every two (2) years. The DLN will notify individuals that their requalification is required 90 days before their expiry (2 years less 90 days the DLN will prompt them). 

    Local PSP FORCE Instructors will conduct requalification.

  • Basic Fitness Training Assistant (BFTA) - Guardian Course Qualification Code: 112290
    Designed for physically fit CAF personnel interested in improving their knowledge of safe and effective physical fitness training methods, leadership abilities and instructional capabilities to assist in supporting their unit’s physical fitness.

    Expectations
    Students will be assessed on their conduct of a group physical fitness training session and implementation of a physical fitness program, as well as a written evaluation.

    NOTE: This is a highly physical / activity based course.

    Course Length
    3 days of online lessons, an assignment and an evaluation
    4 day in person workshop (practical demonstrations, group discussions, and student presentations)

    Prerequisites
    • Successfully completed the FORCE evaluation in the past 12 months 
    • Rank of Corporal (Cpl), Sailor First Class (S1) and above 
    • Currently qualified in Standard First Aid and CPR 
    • Medical standards:

  • Advanced Fitness Training Assistant (AFTA) - Guardian Course Qualification Code: 112390
    For military personnel who have successfully completed the BFTA (Basic Fitness Training Assistant) qualification. This qualification will expand your physical fitness training methods, leadership abilities and instructional capabilities that were taught on the BFTA.
    Expectations

    Students will learn how to identify exercise safety concerns of advanced training methods. They will also be assessed on their conduct of a tactical/operational group physical fitness training session, instruction and demonstration of safe lifting techniques, conduct of group competitive games, and achieving passing grades in written evaluations.

    NOTE: This is a highly physical / activity based course.

    Course length
    10 days in person workshop:
    Lectures, practical demonstrations, group discussions, and student presentations.

    Prerequisites
    • BFTA qualified and involved with the unit’s/school’s PT program on a regular basis 
    • Successfully completed the FORCE evaluation in the past 12 months 
    • Rank of Master Corporal (MCpl), Master Sailor (MS) and above 
    • Currently qualified in Standard First Aid and CPR 
    • Medical standards:

  • Unit Fitness and Sports Officer (UFSO) - Guardian Course Qualification Code: 112436
    For military personnel in a position of leadership related to their unit’s physical fitness training and sports program. 

    Objective
    This course is designed to train CAF personnel to manage their unit’s physical fitness and sports activities, by effectively matching the annual physical fitness training program to the operational and training schedule of a unit. This will enable units to follow a specific fitness and sport plan that is catered to their unique requirement.

    Course Length
    5 training days in person workshop:
    Lectures, practical demonstrations, group discussions, and student presentations.

    Prerequisites
    • BFTA or AFTA qualified and involved with the unit’s/school’s PT program on a regular basis. 
    • Successfully completed the FORCE evaluation in the past 12 months. 
    • Rank of Sergeant, Petty Officer 2nd class and above. 
    • Currently qualified in Standard First Aid and CPR. 
    • Medical standards:

How to register for Training Courses

  • Registration and attendance must be approved through the Chain of Command. 
  • Your unit Training Coordinator, Training Officer, or Operations and Training cell must nominate you in Guardian for all courses.  
  • Local BFTA nominations must be done through the local Fitness Coordinator.

To ensure you are nominated for a specific course date:

  • The serial number and date of that session must be entered in the comments field in Guardian (click on TAB 3 to get to the comments field). 
  • If the course serial number and date are not entered with your nomination, you will be put on a course waiting list for no specific course date. 

Nominations are confirmed approximately 30 days prior to the course start date. 

  • Participants will receive a Guardian course-loading message containing specifics on FIN codes and an email containing the Joining Instructions.
  • If participants cannot attend the session, they must email the National PSP Training Center at [email protected] and have their nomination changed or removed in Guardian by their unit Training Coordinators, Training Officers, or Operations and Training cells.

Fees

There are no course registration fees. 

Regular Force members: MPGTG covers the cost for the course, travel, TD, and R&Q. 

Reservists: MPGTG covers only the course cost (includes R&Q). Reservists’ units are responsible for covering the cost of the participants travel, TD, and wages.
